RESUMO

We present a three-step method to perform system identification and optimal control of nonlinear systems. Our approach is mainly data-driven and does not require active excitation of the system to perform system identification. In particular, it is designed for systems for which only historical data under closed-loop control are available and where historical control commands exhibit low variability. In the first step, simple simulation models of the system are built and run under various conditions. In the second step, a neural network architecture is extensively trained on the simulation outputs to learn the system physics and retrained with historical data from the real system with stopping rules. These constraints avoid overfitting that arises by fitting closed-loop controlled systems. By doing so, we obtain one (or many) system model(s), represented by this architecture, whose behavior can be chosen to match more or less the real system. Finally, state-of-the-art reinforcement learning with a variant of domain randomization and distributed learning is used for optimal control of the system. We first illustrate the model identification strategy with a simple example, the pendulum with external torque. We then apply our method to model and optimize the control of a large building facility located in Switzerland. Simulation results demonstrate that this approach generates stable functional controllers that outperform on comfort and energy benchmark rule-based controllers.

Introducción: La circunferencia del brazo (CB) se reconoce como buen indicador del estado nutricional. Objetivo: Estimar los percentilos de referencia para la CB y las áreas muscular (AM) y grasa (AG) del brazo en la población infantojuvenil argentina mediante el empleo del método LMS (lambda, mu, sigma, en inglés). Materiales y métodos: La muestra estuvo constituida por escolares de 4,0 a 13,9 años residentes en Jujuy, Catamarca, Misiones, Buenos Aires, Mendoza y Chubut. Las mediciones antropométricas de la CB y del pliegue tricipital se realizaron entre 2003 y 2008 siguiendo protocolos estandarizados. Se estimaron las AM, AG, se calcularon los percentilos por edad y sexo, y se compararon mediante el análisis de la varianza. Resultados: Se incluyeron 22 736 escolares (11 397 varones y 11 339 mujeres). Los valores correspondientes al percentilo 50 fueron superiores, en las mujeres, para CB y AG, y, en los varones, para AM. Las curvas de CB presentaron incrementos más marcados a partir de los 7 años en todos los percentilos, para ambos sexos. Un patrón similar se observó para AM, con valores superiores en los varones. Por último, el AG mostró aumento constante en las mujeres y estabilización en los varones a partir de los 11 años. Se observaron diferencias para la edad. Conclusiones: Los valores de percentilos, tabulados y graficados, de la CB y de las AM y AG del brazo pueden constituir una referencia local para estudios epidemiológicos y antropológicos.

Subjects and methods: data from 22,736 school-children aged 4-14 years from six Argentinean provinces were collected. MUAC and triceps skinfold thickness were measured and the derived AMA and AFA measures were calculated. Analyses were performed with GAMLß using the R software. Differences in mean values of Sa and R were compared in percentiles 3, 50 and 97. Results: mean values of MUAC and AMA in boys and girls were higher in R than in Sa at all ages; conversely, AFA values were lower. Conclusions: our results confirm differences in upper arm anthropometry of Argentinean school-children with respect to the US reference. The higher adipose tissue and lower skeletal muscle mass observed in Argentinean children could be partly associated with the different ethnic origin of both populations. However, differences should be interpreted in the context of an obesogenic environment, which has favored a calorie-protein imbalance


Antecedentes: la medición de la circunferencia del brazo (MUAC), así como la estimación de la grasa subcutánea y muscular constituyen un método alternativo para diagnosticar el sobrepeso y evaluar el crecimiento y las reservas proteicas y energéticas. Objetivo: comparar las mediciones de MUAC, área muscular (AMA) y área grasa (AFA) del brazo de niños y niñas argentinos (Sa) con curvas de referencia para niños y niñas de Estados Unidos (R). Sujetos y métodos: se recopilaron datos de 22,736 escolares de 4 a 14 años de edad de seis provincias argentinas. Se obtuvieron medidas de MUAC y pliegue subcutáneo tricipital y se calcularon AMA y AFA. Los análisis se realizaron con GAMLß utilizando el software R. Las diferencias en los valores medios de Sa y R se compararon para los percentiles 3, 50 y 97. Resultados: a todas las edades los valores medios de MUAC y AMA en niños y niñas fueron más altos en R que en Sa; por el contrario, los valores de AFA fueron más bajos. Conclusiones: nuestros resultados confirman la existencia de diferencias en la antropometría mesobraquial de los niños argentinos con respecto a los de la referencia. La mayor cantidad de tejido adiposo y menor de tejido muscular observada en los niños argentinos de ambos sexos puede ser parcialmente asociada con el diferente origen étnico de ambas poblaciones. Sin embargo, las diferencias podrían interpretarse en el contexto de un ambiente obesogénico, el cual habría favorecido el desbalance proteico-calórico

OBJECTIVEThe authors developed a new, real-time interactive inverse planning approach, based on a fully convex framework, to be used for Gamma Knife radiosurgery.METHODSThe convex framework is based on the precomputation of a dictionary composed of the individual dose distributions of all possible shots, considering all their possible locations, sizes, and shapes inside the target volume. The convex problem is solved to determine the plan, i.e., which shots and with which weights, that will actually be used, considering a sparsity constraint on the shots to fulfill the constraints while minimizing the beam-on time. The system is called IntuitivePlan and allows data to be transferred from generated dose plans into the Gamma Knife treatment planning software for further dosimetry evaluation.RESULTSThe system has been very efficiently implemented, and an optimal plan is usually obtained in less than 1 to 2 minutes, depending on the complexity of the problem, on a desktop computer or in only a few minutes on a high-end laptop. Dosimetry data from 5 cases, 2 meningiomas and 3 vestibular schwannomas, were generated with IntuitivePlan. Results of evaluation of the dosimetry characteristics are very satisfactory and adequate in terms of conformity, selectivity, gradient, protection of organs at risk, and treatment time.CONCLUSIONSThe possibility of using optimal, interactive real-time inverse planning in conjunction with the Leksell Gamma Knife opens new perspectives in radiosurgery, especially considering the potential use of the full capabilities of the latest generations of the Leksell Gamma Knife. This approach gives new users the possibility of using the system for easier and quicker access to good-quality plans with a shorter technical training period and opens avenues for new planning strategies for expert users. The use of a convex optimization approach allows an optimal plan to be provided in a very short processing time. This way, innovative graphical user interfaces can be developed, allowing the user to interact directly with the planning system to graphically define the desired dose map and to modify on-the-fly the dose map by moving, in a very user-friendly manner, the isodose surfaces of an initial plan. Further independent quantitative prospective evaluation comparing inverse planned and forward planned cases is warranted to validate this novel and promising treatment planning approach.

Conventional ultrasound (US) image reconstruction methods rely on delay-and-sum (DAS) beamforming, which is a relatively poor solution to the image reconstruction problem. An alternative to DAS consists in using iterative techniques, which require both an accurate measurement model and a strong prior on the image under scrutiny. Toward this goal, much effort has been deployed in formulating models for US imaging, which usually require a large amount of memory to store the matrix coefficients. We present two different techniques, which take advantage of fast and matrix-free formulations derived for the measurement model and its adjoint, and rely on sparsity of US images in well-chosen models. Sparse regularization is used for enhanced image reconstruction. Compressed beamforming exploits the compressed sensing framework to restore high-quality images from fewer raw data than state-of-the-art approaches. Using simulated data and in vivo experimental acquisitions, we show that the proposed approach is three orders of magnitude faster than non-DAS state-of-the-art methods, with comparable or better image quality.

RESUMO

Ultrafast imaging based on plane-wave (PW) insonification is an active area of research due to its capability of reaching high frame rates. Among PW imaging methods, Fourier-based approaches have demonstrated to be competitive compared with traditional delay and sum methods. Motivated by the success of compressed sensing techniques in other Fourier imaging modalities, like magnetic resonance imaging, we propose a new sparse regularization framework to reconstruct highquality ultrasound (US) images. The framework takes advantage of both the ability to formulate the imaging inverse problem in the Fourier domain and the sparsity of US images in a sparsifying domain. We show, by means of simulations, in vitro and in vivo data, that the proposed framework significantly reduces image artifacts, i.e., measurement noise and sidelobes, compared with classical methods, leading to an increase of the image quality.

RESUMO

Ultrafast ultrasound imaging has become an intensive area of research thanks to its capability in reaching high frame rates. In this paper, we propose a scheme that allows the extension of the current Fourier-based techniques derived for planar acquisition to the reconstruction of sectorial scan with wide angle using diverging waves. The flexibility of the proposed formulation was assessed through two different Fourier-based techniques. The performance of the derived approaches was evaluated in terms of resolution and contrast from both simulations and in vitro experiments. The comparisons of the current state-of-the-art method with the conventional delay-and-sum technique illustrated the potential of the derived methods for producing competitive results with lower computational complexity.

Recent results in telecardiology show that compressed sensing (CS) is a promising tool to lower energy consumption in wireless body area networks for electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring. However, the performance of current CS-based algorithms, in terms of compression rate and reconstruction quality of the ECG, still falls short of the performance attained by state-of-the-art wavelet-based algorithms. In this paper, we propose to exploit the structure of the wavelet representation of the ECG signal to boost the performance of CS-based methods for compression and reconstruction of ECG signals. More precisely, we incorporate prior information about the wavelet dependencies across scales into the reconstruction algorithms and exploit the high fraction of common support of the wavelet coefficients of consecutive ECG segments. Experimental results utilizing the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database show that significant performance gains, in terms of compression rate and reconstruction quality, can be obtained by the proposed algorithms compared to current CS-based methods.

Se comparan las prevalencias de sobrepeso (SP) y obesidad (OB) en escolares jujeños de distintos niveles altitudinales utilizando las referencias de la International Obesity Task Force (IOTF), de los Centers for Disease Control (CDC) y de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), y la concordancia entre ellas. Materiales y métodos. Los datos de peso y talla de 15 541 escolares (PROSANE) se agruparon en tierras altas (TA) (= 2500 msnm) y bajas (TB) (< 2500 msnm), y en dos grupos de edad (5 a 6,99 y 11 a 12,99 años). Se calcularon las prevalencias de SP, OB y SP+OB según las referencias. Las diferencias entre variables y prevalencias se establecieron con la prueba de la ?² y la prueba de la t, y la concordancia entre criterios, con el índice kappa. Resultados. Los escolares de las TA presentaron menor peso, talla e índice de masa corporal (IMC) (p< 0,05). Las prevalencias de SP, OB y SP+OB con OMS fueron superiores, excepto para SP en ambos sexos de 11 a 12,99 años de TB y TA. Independientemente de las referencias, el sexo y la edad, las prevalencias de SP, OB y SP+OB fueron, en general, mayores en las TB. La concordancia entre las referencias IOTF/CDC fue buena-muy buena, y entre estas y las de la OMS, regular-moderada. Conclusiones. Los escolares de TA presentaron menor prevalencia de SB y OB. La mejor concordancia se dio entre las referencias IOTF y CDC.


Introduction. Prevalences of overweight and obesity in students from different altitudinal zones of Jujuy are compared using the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) references, and the agreement among them. Material and Methods. Weight and height data from 15 541 students were grouped in highlands (HL) (=2500 MASL) and lowlands (LL) (<2500 MASL) and in two age groups (5-6.99 years old and 11-12.99 years old). Overweight and obesity prevalences were calculated according to the different references. The differences in outcome measures and prevalences were established using the ?2 test and the t test, and agreement among the criteria was calculated using the kappa index. Results. Students from the HL had lower weight, height and body mass index (BMI) values (p< 0.05). Overweight and obesity prevalences compared to the WHO reference were higher, except for overweight in students of both sexes, from 11 to 12.99 years old, from the HL and the LL. Regardless of the references, gender and age, overweight and obesity prevalences were generally higher in the LL. Agreement between the IOTF and the CDC was good-very good, and agreement among them and the WHO was fair-moderate. Conclusions. Students from the HL had a lower overweight and obesity prevalence. The greatest agreement was observed between the IOTF and the CDC references.

La concordancia entre las referencias IOTF/CDC fue buena-muy buena, y entre estas y las de la OMS, regular-moderada. Conclusiones. Los escolares de TA presentaron menor prevalencia de SB y OB. La mejor concordancia se dio entre las referencias IOTF y CDC.(AU)


Introduction. Prevalences of overweight and obesity in students from different altitudinal zones of Jujuy are compared using the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) references, and the agreement among them. Material and Methods. Weight and height data from 15 541 students were grouped in highlands (HL) (=2500 MASL) and lowlands (LL) (<2500 MASL) and in two age groups (5-6.99 years old and 11-12.99 years old). Overweight and obesity prevalences were calculated according to the different references. The differences in outcome measures and prevalences were established using the ?2 test and the t test, and agreement among the criteria was calculated using the kappa index. Results. Students from the HL had lower weight, height and body mass index (BMI) values (p< 0.05). Overweight and obesity prevalences compared to the WHO reference were higher, except for overweight in students of both sexes, from 11 to 12.99 years old, from the HL and the LL. Regardless of the references, gender and age, overweight and obesity prevalences were generally higher in the LL. Agreement between the IOTF and the CDC was good-very good, and agreement among them and the WHO was fair-moderate. Conclusions. Students from the HL had a lower overweight and obesity prevalence. The greatest agreement was observed between the IOTF and the CDC references.(AU)

RESUMO

An innovative electrocardiogram compression algorithm is presented in this paper. The proposed method is based on matrix completion, a new paradigm in signal processing that seeks to recover a low-rank matrix based on a small number of observations. The low-rank matrix is obtained via normalization of electrocardiogram records. Using matrix completion, the ECG data matrix is recovered from a few number of entries, thereby yielding high compression ratios comparable to those obtained by existing compression techniques. The proposed scheme offers a low-complexity encoder, good tolerance to quantization noise, and good quality reconstruction.

Of the patients admitted to our center, 14.44% (26 patients) required evaluation by the Neurosurgery Department. Of these, 29.63% (7 patients) required surgery within 8 hours and 7.69% within the following 48 hours. During the days after the attack, neurological symptoms developed in hospitalized patients.
